The Edinburgh College of Art is one of the oldest and largest arts colleges in Europe, established in Edinburgh in 1760. The college has its main campus at Lauriston Place and has two campus sites at Grassmarket. The college offers a range of courses in architecture, art and design as well as research opportunities for graduates. Study opportunities are also available to students from the international community.
The Edinburgh College of Art offers courses in drawing and painting, visual communication, design and applied arts, sculpture, architecture and landscape architecture. The college also offers combined studies programs to allow students to experiment with different fields of design and art. A specialized art studies course is also available. Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees are available in visual and cultural studies, which explore various aspects of art and design with regard to visual culture.
The Edinburgh College of Art also offers research degrees and a specialized research strategy as well as seminars and conferences. Regular events, exhibitions and annual shows which feature the work of the students take place at the college. Past shows have included the work of Douglas Gordon and an array of young Japanese artists. The college also offers a special Summer School program, which offers week-long courses on a variety of subjects like graphic design, photography, stained glass, printmaking and painting. Portfolio preparation courses are also offered for students looking to apply to art colleges.
