The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths set up its Technical and Recreative Institute in 1891 to provide educational opportunities for the people of New Cross. The University of London acquired the new Institute and re-established it as Goldsmiths College in 1904.

Goldsmiths offer a wide range of full-time and part-time undergraduate, postgraduate, teacher training (PGCE) and professional and community programmers and courses. At undergraduate level, the college offers University of London degrees: BA, BA (Ed), BMus and B.Sc.; and the Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) in Community Work. At postgraduate level, there are University of London degrees: MA, MMus, MSc and the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE); and College certificates and diplomas. Goldsmiths has been an active participant in the University of Londonís External Programme, which offers degrees via distance learning to 32,000 students worldwide.
The College also offers more than 570 research students on M. Phil. and Ph.D. programmes, and in some subjects introduced the MRes (Master of Research). Goldsmiths College Research Office and Graduate Center provide resources for researchers across all College disciplines at all stages of their career to nurture, encourage, promote, and facilitate research activity. Further, the Graduate Center offers Research Students support, administration, and a rigorous Research Methods training course, as well as a dedicated Computing Suite and Seminar Room.
