The first campus of the University of Bath in Swindon opened in 2000 on the site of Oakfield School. This was followed by the extensive refurbishment that was funded jointly by the University of Bath in Swindon and Swindon Borough Council. The University is committed to developing programmes that are tailored to fulfill the academic needs of the local students.
The University of Bath in Swindon offers a wide array of flexible study opportunities to its students. This includes full-time undergraduate courses, foundation degree programs and evening classes. The undergraduate courses include BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies (offered by the Department of Education) and BSc (Hons) in Social Work and Applied Social Studies (offered by the Department of Social and Policy Sciences). The University of Bath in Swindon also offers various certificate courses, such as the Certificate of Education. It is a one-year, part-time programme, franchised to one of Oakfield's partner institutions, Wiltshire College, for delivery.
What is more, recently, the University has also appointed a widening participation officer at Oakfield with an objective to increase the participation in Higher education by under-privileged people whose family have not traditionally gone to university. Again, apart from the regular academic activities, the University of Bath in Swindon also runs a range of community projects. This includes evening classes, free public lectures, and activity weeks for local schoolchildren.
