Stranmillis University College was set up in 1922 to offer state-funded teacher education at pre-service and in-service levels. Stranmillis University College has a distinctive reputation worldwide as a centre of excellence for higher education teaching and research. The University College has had an academic relationship with Queen's.
Stranmillis University College offers courses at BEd, PGCE and MEd/MSc level; a new BA (Early Childhood Studies) degree was embarked on in September 1996. A BSc (Health and Leisure Studies) degree was then launched in September 1998, along with a part-time MA (Arts in the Community). A part-time Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Languages (TESOL) is also offered on demand, along with a pioneering Certificate in Working with Schools and the Community.
In 2001, the Education teaching provision at Stranmillis was judged by the Quality Assurance Agency to merit a maximum score of 24 out of 24, a result that put the College within the top five percent of university schools of education nationally.
The Northern Ireland Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) have recently (2003) applauded the College on various facets like its significant progress in establishing focused partnerships with schools; teaching competences; momentous progress in the student teachers' ability to administer group and individual learning, literacy, numeracy, and ICT across the curriculum and so on.
The University College is strongly dedicated to international outreach and it has established staff and student exchange partnerships with higher education institutions throughout the European Union, in the United States of America, and in South Africa.
