University Profile

North East Wales Institute (NEWI) is located in the town of Wrexham. The institute has two campuses-the Plas Coch campus, spread over 31 acres and which has almost all of the departments, and the Regent Street campus, which houses the North Wales School of Art & Design.

Though the history of the college can be traced back to as early as 1887, the college as it is known today came to being in 1975. The college has now become a full member of the University of Wales.

NEWI offers Honours degrees and Masters degrees in various disciplines; above this, there are numerous job-oriented certificate and diploma courses. Students at NEWI can also pursue an Mphil or a PhD in various subjects. Students are given the flexibility of doing most of the courses on a part-time or full-time basis. The college offers scholarships in limited amounts to a section of deserving students.

NEWI has a student force of about 6500, about 5% of which are international students. The college offers on-campus accommodation to its students. Various sporting and cultural events take place regularly in the campus. The Plas Coch sports centre hosts various sports events and conferences. The college also has a science information centre displaying scientific experiments.
