The Scottish Association for Marine Science was founded in the early part of the 19th century, with its actual conception being traced back to 1884. The institute is entirely dedicated to the field of marine research and offers a range of independent research opportunities as well as learning opportunities. The institute is currently a member of the UHI Millennium Institute.
Though it is primarily concerned with research, the Scottish Association for Marine Science also runs an undergraduate course in marine science. Students have the added advantage of undertaking their course in a research facility that is equipped with the latest technology and equipment. Students are also given the opportunity to interact with researchers and scientists. The course is also open to students from the international community and mature students are also encouraged to apply. Visits by a number of international research scholars are hosted by the institute.
The Scottish Association for Marine Science also offers postgraduate learning and research opportunities as well as PhD research opportunities. The institute is also dedicated to spreading the awareness for science and environmental issues in schools, right from the primary level. Appointments can be made for students to either visit the laboratory or to have a marine scientist come over and give a presentation. The institute is currently involved with a number of major research projects which include arctic research as well as studies in the fields of ecology and biogeochemistry.
