Originally started as a Gaelic Library in 1973, within the premises of a two hundred year old farm building in Ostaig, Scotland, the Sabhal Mor Ostaig is well known around the world as a centre for the Gaelic language and culture. A specialised college, all higher education and administration is conducted in Scottish Gaelic.
Situated in Sleat on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, the Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has a well-equipped library, a research centre, rooms for a hundred students, and a childcare facility.
Currently the College offers a choice of three Bachelors in Arts (Honours) degrees in the Gaelic language and related areas, which can also be pursued through distance learning over internet. It also plans to introduce new degrees and a course in traditional music. There are also level based short-term courses in Gaelic conversation, music, dance, and culture.
The School offers a three-year postgraduate course in Material Culture and the Environment as well as varied research opportunities for candidates. The college is also involved in teaching Gaelic and business to the local community through its Learning Centre.
There are around 100 students studying full-time, with many more on short term and distance learning programs. Most of the students are from Scotland. Some students come from North America, Europe, and even Asia. Successful students have gone on to work for Gaelic tourism and media companies.
The Website of Sabhal Mor Ostaig is written in both Gaelic and English, and registered students who want to study online can view course materials by signing in.
