Oatridge College was founded in 1973 in Ecclesmachan, a village located 15 miles to the West of Edinburgh. It is one of the premier landbased colleges in Scotland. The college aims to provide education in the fields of horticulture and agriculture, landscaping, greenkeeping, equine studies and animal care. The campus has new sports fields, engineering workshops and a cross-country riding course. There are about four hundred full-time students and two thousand part-time students in the college every year. The campus even has a commercial working farm, riding schools and stables, and a nine-hole golf course. Various qualifications are offered including Access levels, National Qualifications and Higher National Diploma.
Courses offered at Oatridge College are varied. They cover many subject areas like Animal Care, Farriery, Equine Studies, Landbased Engineering and Countryside Management. Some short specialist training courses are also offered which include Equestrian Skills, Amateur Gardening, Dog Grooming, Safe Use of Pesticides and First Aid at Work. Starting 24th September 2007, the new Rural Skills Academy will offer three courses for 16 to 24 year old students. These are Landscape Gardening, Engineering, and Environment and Conservation.
Several student support services are available at Oatridge College. These include residential accommodation on campus, childcare, personal and academic counselling and transport service between the college and Edinburgh. Some students can receive funds, grants and bursaries from the college. Conference rooms and equipment are hired out by the college.
