In the 1890s, Harper Adam University College opened and began to offer programmes for specialization in agriculture. The full college started in April 1901 and was financed by a private bequest. It got its name from Thomas Harper Adam, who was a farmer and had bequeathed his land to the college. The college now educates not only small farmerís sons but also students from wealthier backgrounds. The college initially provided courses for men only. However, in 1915, it started providing courses for women, too.
Harper Adam University College was listed as the second-best college of its kind in a recent university guide of the times. The collegeís employability record is high because of its good contacts with food, rural and agricultural industries and businesses.
