Coatbridge College has the distinction of being the oldest college in Scotland. It was established in 1891 as Coatbridge Technical School and moved to its present location in 1930. The college now boasts modern facilities in its campus for the students to make use of. It has a nursery for children up to the age of 5 years, a flexible learning centre, a theatre, library, refectory, learning support centre and training salons for hair and beauty courses. There are many courses offered at Coatbridge College for students in different modes of study. Students can choose to study through part-time, full-time, day, evening, distance learning and flexible learning modes.
The courses at Coatbridge College cover a large variety of subjects. Some of these are Beauty Therapy, Computing, Dental Nursing, Performing Arts, Social Care, General Education and Creative Technologies. Many qualifications are awarded for the courses. For example, in Beauty Therapy courses, students can obtain their National Qualifications, Higher National Certificates or Higher National Diplomas. Evening and leisure courses include First Aid, Flower Arranging, Dance for Fitness, Basic Make-up Techniques and British Sign Language.
Several services are available for the students in different areas. There is funding support for eligible students and a college bursary or Education Maintenance Allowance for students from low income homes aged between 16 and 18 years. There are also hardship and childcare funds for some students who need it and learning support for students with disabilities.
