Founded in 1947, Bicton College started out as an institution of just 25 women from the Women’s Land Army. Today, the college is open to both men and women and offers a variety of courses, including higher education classes, part time and short courses as well as courses for 14-16 year olds. Students who are unsure about which course to choose, can visit the college via appointment on special course advice days to get a taste of what the courses are like.
Bicton College offers 14-16 year olds a range of vocational courses such as animal care and horticulture. Further education courses are also available for fields such as outdoor leisure management and equine studies. Students interested in higher education programmes have a choice of subjects which include agriculture, mechanization and engineering. Part time and short courses are also available for subjects ranging from sugar craft and safe lifting to digital photography and veterinary nursing.
Bicton College also runs a supported learning programme which teaches students a variety of skills including how to work with farm animals, drive a tractor as well as skills such as computing. A learning resource centre is also available to students consisting of a computer centre, library and learner support for those with special learning needs. Accommodation, on-campus and of-campus, is available as well. A Wardening Services team is also on hand which helps in the coordination of sports and social events at the college.
